Dambulla Rock Temple / Sigiriya Rock Temple / Kandalama Lake

Dambulla Rock Temple

The Dambulla Rock Temple/Cave Temple is a sacred cave temple complex which has been a pilgrimage site for the last 22 centuries and this five cave sanctuary is the largest cave temple complex in the country. The ascent to the cave on the gigantic rock face will take you a good 10 minutes and once at the summit the panoramic view of the surrounding with its dense green forests and rain water reservoirs will take your breath away. The sheen of the golden paint on the ceilings and the statues within the cave gave it the name of ‘’Rangiri’’ meaning Golden colored. Within these caves you will find a collection of 150 statues of the Buddhist order as well as numerous paintings depicting the history of the island.

Sigiriya Rock Temple

Sigiriya, also called the Lion Rock Citadel or Sinhagiri in Sinhalese, is one of the most famed UNESCO World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka. This well preserved illustrations of ancient architectural ingenuity was established by King Kasyappa during the years 477-485 AD, the fortress was mostly forgotten after his defeat and death, until it was discovered by the British many years later. On your way to the summit which houses the ruins of the castle, you will witness various terraced gardens and glistening water gardens all cut into the rock, as well as the famous Sigiriya Frescos, which are paintings of Celestial Nymphs.

Kandalama Lake

The Kandalama Lake is actually a man-made reservoir created by the Kings of ancient times in order to serve as a water soured for the irrigation lands surrounding it. It’s beautiful and tranquil waters, provide water for irrigation and farming to date and also promotes the local fishing industry. Its mammoth and impressive architecture is a true reflection of the skill that was possessed by our predecessors.
